Balcony mounting: railing type, tilt and load path
A balcony structure has one job: transfer the weight of the module and the wind forces acting on it into something that can carry them. That makes the railing type the first decision, because a round steel bar, a flat square profile, a glass infill panel and a solid concrete parapet each need a different bracket and a different load path. The module itself is almost interchangeable, the fixing is not.
Most kits use hook brackets that hang over the top rail and are locked with clamps or U-bolts, or an adjustable frame that sets a tilt between roughly 0 and 45 degrees. Anodised aluminium profiles with A2 stainless fasteners are the norm, because a balcony is a wet, exposed position and galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals shows up within a couple of seasons.

How to choose a balcony mounting structure
Start with what you are fixing to, not with the panel. Measure the railing profile and its dimensions, check whether the balustrade is structural or an infill, and find out what the building owner allows before anything is ordered.
Then settle the three numbers that decide the rest: panel dimensions against the free railing length, total weight including the frame, and the tilt angle, which drives both yield and the wind force the bracket has to resist.

Railing type decides the bracket
Every balcony falls into one of four families, and the bracket has to match the one in front of you.
- Round metal bars: the easiest case. Hook brackets with saddle clamps or U-bolts sized to the tube diameter, usually 25 to 60 mm. Check the diameter with a caliper, not by eye.
- Square or flat bar: needs a clamp with flat jaws and rubber inserts. A U-bolt intended for tube will point-load a square profile and mark or deform it.
- Glass infill: the glass is often not a load bearing element. Use clamps that grip the top rail or the supporting posts, or an over-parapet frame. Clamping directly onto glass without the manufacturer's approval risks edge damage and breakage.
- Solid parapet: a hook frame that sits over the wall, ballasted or bolted, or chemical anchors set into structural concrete. Never anchor into render or external insulation.
- Terrace or balcony floor: a small ballasted or free-standing frame with rubber feet, which avoids drilling entirely and keeps the panel below the railing line.
Tilt angle and adjustable brackets
A module hung vertically on a railing faces the sun at a poor angle in summer and loses roughly a quarter to a third of the yield of an optimally tilted panel. It does, however, perform relatively well in winter and around sunrise and sunset, when the sun is low, and it collects far less snow and dirt.
- Vertical, 90 degrees: lowest wind exposure, flattest production curve, simplest fixing. The sensible default on exposed or high balconies.
- Adjustable 15 to 45 degrees: recovers most of the lost summer yield, but every degree of tilt increases the lever arm and the uplift on the bracket.
- Seasonal adjustment only makes sense where the frame can be reached safely and re-torqued afterwards.
- Orientation is fixed by the building. East or west facing balconies spread output across the morning or evening, which often matches household consumption better than a south peak.
Tip from practice
Re-check every clamp with a torque wrench after the first strong wind, and again after the first winter. Aluminium relaxes under load and clamps that were tight in April are often finger loose by autumn. Note the manufacturer's torque value on a label inside the balcony door so the next check is not guesswork.
Wind load: a railing is not a roof structure
A roof mounting system is calculated against wind and snow load for a defined terrain category and building height. A balustrade has no such rating. It is designed to resist a horizontal line load from people, and a panel bolted to it adds a large surface that generates both pressure and suction, with the force rising with the square of wind speed and with building height.
- Keep the surface low and flat: a vertical panel inside the railing outline is far less loaded than a tilted one projecting above it.
- Do not overhang the panel beyond the balcony edge over a pavement or a neighbouring property.
- Spread the load over several bars or posts rather than two points in the middle of a long span.
- Add secondary securing, a stainless cable or strap, so no single clamp failure can release the module.
- Upper floors and corners of a building see the highest local wind pressures. Above the third floor, treat a tilted installation as something to get engineering advice on.
Weight limits, landlord and building consent
A full-size module weighs around 20 to 25 kg, and the frame, brackets and microinverter add several kilograms more, so a two panel balcony set is typically 50 to 60 kg hanging off a railing.
- Tenants generally need the landlord's consent, especially for anything drilled into the structure or the facade.
- Apartment blocks: the balustrade and the facade are usually common property, so the owners' association or building manager decides, not the individual flat owner.
- Non-invasive first: clamp-on and ballasted solutions are far easier to get approved than anchors, and they leave no trace when the tenancy ends.
- Appearance rules and listed or protected buildings can restrict panels visible from the street. Check before buying.
- Registration: plug-in systems must be notified to the grid operator in most European countries, and the national output limit for the inverter applies regardless of how the panel is mounted.
Panel size that fits a standard balcony
Railings are commonly 1.0 to 1.2 m high and the free run between posts is often shorter than people assume. A modern full-format module is around 1722 x 1134 mm, so mounted horizontally it needs about 1.8 m of clear railing and will project below the balustrade unless the frame is set high.
- Measure the clear length between obstacles, drainage outlets, doors and the neighbouring partition before choosing the module format.
- Landscape orientation suits long railings, portrait suits short ones but concentrates the load on fewer bars.
- Smaller formats in the 380 to 450 W class are easier to handle on a balcony, where there is rarely room for two people to manoeuvre a large panel.
- Glass-glass modules are heavier than glass-backsheet, which matters when the fixing is the constraint.
Microinverter pairing and cable routing
A balcony set is a plug-in system, so each panel feeds a microinverter that converts DC to mains AC directly behind the module. One or two panels per unit is typical, and the inverter's AC output, not the panel rating, is what the national plug-in limit applies to.
- Match the MPPT count to the number of panels. Two panels on one MPPT input behave as a string and the shaded one drags the other down.
- Mount the inverter in shade behind the module or on the wall, not lying on the floor where water collects, and respect its IP rating and clearance.
- Cable routing: use UV-resistant cable, keep it clear of the railing hinge points, form a drip loop before any connector and never trap the lead in a window or door that closes on it. Flat sealing leads exist for exactly this.
- The socket should be a known outdoor-rated circuit, ideally dedicated, and the plug type has to follow national rules. Do not use daisy chained extension leads or reels.
- Connectors and glands from the installation material range keep the AC side sealed and the DC side on proper MC4 terminations.

How do I get the cable indoors without damaging the seal?
Use a flat sealing lead designed to pass under a window or door gasket, or a purpose made wall bushing. Never trap a round cable in a closing frame. Keep the run UV-resistant, clear of hinges, and form a drip loop before every connector.
Can I use a balcony structure on a flat terrace floor?
Yes. A free-standing ballasted frame with rubber feet avoids drilling completely, keeps the panel below the railing line and lets you set a proper tilt. Check the floor loading, size the ballast for local wind conditions, and protect the waterproofing layer under the feet.
Balcony mounting depends on the railing construction and its load capacity, and on the consent of the building owner or owners association.
