What actually differs between module manufacturers
All mainstream crystalline modules are certified to the same standards, IEC 61215 for design qualification and IEC 61730 for safety, and the efficiency spread between competing panels of the same generation is small. The differences that decide a twenty-five year investment are elsewhere: which cell technology generation the line is currently building, how the product warranty and the performance warranty are worded and how long each runs, the annual degradation rate printed in the warranty table, and the manufacturer's bankability, meaning the realistic chance that the company is still there to honour a claim in year eighteen.

How to choose a module brand
Brand is the axis that fixes everything you cannot change later. Panels stay on the roof for decades, the mounting system is cut to their frame, the string design is built around their electrical values, and any replacement has to slot into that geometry and that string.
Work through it in this order: the cell technology generation the brand is currently shipping, then the two warranty documents and the degradation table inside them, then dimensional and electrical consistency across the batch you are buying, and finally replacement availability and the practical route for a claim.

Cell technology generation
Manufacturers do not all sit on the same rung of the technology ladder at the same time, and a brand's current flagship line tells you more than its name does.
- TOPCon is the volume standard for new N-type production: higher efficiency per square metre, a lower temperature coefficient and slower degradation than PERC.
- Mono PERC is the mature P-type generation. Still sound where roof area is not the binding constraint, but it degrades faster and runs hotter.
- Back-contact cells move the busbars to the rear, which removes front-side shading and raises efficiency further. Only some manufacturers build them.
- HJT has the best temperature coefficient of the group and suits hot, poorly ventilated roofs.
- Practical consequence: a brand mid-transition may ship two generations under similar model names. Check the exact model code on the datasheet, not the family name.
Product warranty, performance warranty and the degradation table
Every module carries both, they cover different failures and they almost never run for the same length of time. Read them as a pair.
- Product warranty covers physical and manufacturing defects: delamination, frame corrosion, junction box failure, backsheet cracking. Typically 12 to 25 years and the number that varies most between brands.
- Performance warranty covers output only, guaranteeing a minimum percentage of nameplate power at stated years. Typically 25 to 30 years across the market, so it is a weak differentiator on its own.
- Which one you actually claim on: in practice most claims are product claims. A long performance warranty attached to a short product warranty is a warning sign, not a bargain.
- Labour and freight: almost all warranties cover the module only. Removal, reinstallation and shipping are usually excluded, which is why physical availability of a replacement matters more than the paper.
The real number hides in the degradation table. A performance warranty is defined by three values: the guaranteed output in year one, the maximum annual decline afterwards, and the guaranteed remaining output at the end of the term. First-year degradation is typically 1 to 2 % and the annual step 0.4 to 0.6 %, with N-type lines at the better end. Multiply it out before you compare brands, because the end-of-term figure, commonly between 80 and 88 % of nameplate, is the only guarantee that actually matters. Note also whether the guarantee is expressed against nameplate power or against measured initial power, and what measurement tolerance the manufacturer applies before accepting a claim.
Tip from practice
Never mix brands within one MPPT string. Even at the same nameplate output, two manufacturers differ in Voc, Impp, temperature coefficient and cell count, so the string runs at the weakest module's current and the string voltage calculation stops being reliable. If you must combine brands on one roof, give each brand its own MPPT input, or equalise at module level with optimisers.
Dimensions, weight and consistency across a batch
Two 450 W panels from different makers can differ by tens of millimetres in length and by two or three kilograms. That changes the rail spacing, the clamp positions, the number of rows that fit and the load on the structure.
- Frame height decides which clamps fit. A 30 mm and a 35 mm frame need different mid and end clamps.
- Clamping zones are specified per model in the installation manual. Clamping outside them voids the warranty, and they move between generations of the same brand.
- Weight per panel drives handling on a pitched roof and the structural calculation on a flat roof or carport.
- Connector type should be identical across the array. Mating different connector systems, even where they physically fit, is a documented cause of hot joints.
- One brand, one batch: ordering the whole array from a single production run keeps all of this constant and simplifies any later claim.
Tolerance and binning
Nameplate power is a bin, not a measurement of your specific panel. Most manufacturers now quote a positive-only tolerance such as 0 to +5 W, meaning no panel is below its label. Older or cheaper lines may quote a symmetrical tolerance such as ±3 %, which allows panels below nameplate in the same box. Within a string the practical issue is current spread: modules are binned by power, but two panels in the same power bin can still differ in Impp, and the string carries the lowest current. Buying one brand, one model and one delivery keeps the spread inside what the manufacturer's own binning allows.
Bankability and replacement in year ten
A twenty-five year warranty is only worth the survival of the company behind it. Look at how long the manufacturer has been shipping into the EU, whether there is a European entity that handles claims rather than only a factory address, and whether the brand has a track record of honouring performance claims. Then look forward: module formats change every two or three years, so the exact model you install today will probably be out of production long before the array is. Keep two or three spare panels from the original batch on site for a large array, record the model code and the manufacturing batch in the handover file, and check whether the mounting system can accept a slightly different frame size if a substitute is ever needed.

Does the brand of a solar panel really matter?
Yes, but not for the reason most buyers expect. Efficiency between competing panels of the same generation is close. Brand decides the warranty wording, the degradation table, dimensional consistency, binning practice and whether a matching replacement can be bought in ten years.
What is the difference between a product warranty and a performance warranty?
The product warranty covers physical defects such as delamination, frame corrosion or a failed junction box, typically for 12 to 25 years. The performance warranty covers output only, usually 25 to 30 years. Most real claims are product claims, so the shorter number matters more.
Can I mix panels from different brands in one system?

Should I buy all the panels for a roof in one batch?
Yes where possible. One brand, one model and one production run keeps dimensions, clamping zones, connectors and electrical binning constant, which simplifies mounting, string design and any later warranty claim. It also guarantees the panels share the same revision of the datasheet.
What if I need to replace one panel in ten years?
The original model will probably be out of production, since formats change every two or three years. Keep spare panels from the original batch for larger arrays, record the model code and batch, and check that the mounting system tolerates a slightly different frame size.
Do all brands use the same cell technology?
No. Manufacturers sit at different points in the transition from Mono PERC to N-type TOPCon, back-contact and HJT cells, and some ship two generations at once under similar family names. Always check the exact model code on the datasheet rather than the brand.
Are panels from the same brand always the same size?
No. Dimensions, frame height, weight and clamping zones change between generations and between output classes within one brand. Take the values from the installation manual for the exact model, because the mounting layout and the structural calculation depend on them.
