Why the brand of a battery is really an inverter decision
Almost every residential pack in this filter uses the same cell chemistry, LiFePO4, and the same architecture: prismatic cells, a module-level BMS and a stack that adds capacity in fixed steps. What separates the manufacturers is not the cells. It is the BMS communication protocol the pack speaks over CAN or RS485, whether the combination of that pack and your inverter appears on the manufacturer's approved combination list, and which firmware versions on both sides were tested together.

How to choose a battery brand
Filtering by brand is useful only once you know what a brand actually commits you to. It is not usable capacity per kWh, where the market is tightly clustered. It is the communication protocol, the granularity of the stack, the wording of the warranty and how easy it will be to buy one more module in year seven.
Work through it in this order: confirm the inverter and its approved list, then the module size against the capacity you actually need, then the warranty basis in years, cycles or throughput, and finally the long-term availability of the same module.

Communication protocol and the approved combination list
A hybrid inverter does not simply push current into a battery. It reads state of charge, cell temperatures, permitted charge and discharge current and fault flags from the BMS, and it does that over a documented protocol. There is no universal mode, and a physically compatible connector proves nothing about whether the two devices will speak.
- CAN bus: the usual choice for high voltage stacks and most modern hybrids. Fast, robust, and the protocol is defined per manufacturer pairing rather than by an open standard.
- RS485: still common on 48 V systems and on Victron Energy style installations, often alongside a documented Modbus register map.
- Approved combination list: both the inverter maker and the battery maker publish one. A pairing counts only if it appears on the list you can actually obtain, in the revision you are buying.
- Firmware pairing: the list names firmware versions. Commission with the inverter and the BMS updated together, and record both versions in the handover documentation.
Module size and stacking granularity
Brands differ in the smallest block of capacity you can add. That granularity decides how closely you can match a real household load profile and how expensive the first expansion will be.
- Small modules of roughly 2 to 3 kWh let you tune capacity finely and are easier to carry up a staircase, but you need more of them and more interconnects.
- Large modules of 5 kWh and above cut the parts count and the commissioning time, at the cost of a coarser step and a heavier lift.
- Maximum stack height is fixed per family. Check the highest number of modules the BMS will address before you promise a future expansion.
- Floor loading and footprint matter in a plant room. A tall tower and a wall-mounted pack of the same capacity need very different space.
Tip from practice
If the customer might expand later, buy the stack that leaves headroom now rather than the one that exactly fits today. Adding a module to an existing tower is routine when the family is still in production and the state of charge of old and new modules can be balanced. Buying a second, different stack later almost always means a second hybrid inverter or a compromise on usable capacity.
Warranty in years, cycles or throughput
Battery warranties are written on three different bases and the headline number tells you very little on its own. Read which of the three limits expires first for the duty cycle you expect.
- Years: a calendar limit, typically ten. Simple, but it says nothing about how hard the pack may be worked.
- Cycles: a count of full charge and discharge cycles at a stated DoD. Compare only at the same depth of discharge, because a cycle at 90 % DoD is not a cycle at 50 %.
- Throughput: total energy in MWh that may pass through the pack. The fairest basis for heavy self-consumption or arbitrage duty, and the one that bites first on a battery cycled twice a day.
- End-of-warranty capacity: the guaranteed remaining usable capacity, often around 70 to 80 %. A long term with a low retained figure is not generous.
- Conditions: ambient temperature range, minimum annual charging, mandatory monitoring connection and approved inverter pairing are all conditions that can void a claim.
Spare modules, and the risk of an orphaned system
Storage is a ten to fifteen year commitment made in a market that redesigns product families every two or three years. The question that matters in year seven is not whether the brand still exists, but whether that exact module is still built, still approved by your inverter's firmware and still stocked in the EU.
- Family longevity: prefer a platform that has already been in production for several years and is still being extended, over a brand new family with one revision behind it.
- EU service route: check that there is a European entity handling RMA, not only a factory contact. Shipping a failed module outside the EU is rarely economic.
- Backwards compatibility: some manufacturers allow a newer module revision into an older stack after a firmware update, others do not. Ask before you rely on it.
- Orphaned system: a stack whose family is discontinued and whose BMS no longer receives updates still works, but it cannot be expanded and a single failed module can end its useful life.
Own-brand ecosystem or open pairing
Manufacturers such as Huawei, SolarEdge, Goodwe, Solinteg and Solis sell inverters and matched storage as one system. That removes the compatibility question and gives you a single warranty counterparty, at the price of being tied to that ecosystem for the life of the installation. Independent battery makers such as Pylontech, Dyness, BYD, Soluna and Vision Battery are approved across many inverters, which gives more freedom on price, stock and future replacement, but leaves the version checking and the two-supplier warranty conversation with you.

Does the battery brand have to match the inverter brand?
Not necessarily, but the pairing must appear on the inverter manufacturer's approved combination list. Own-brand storage guarantees that automatically. Independent brands such as Pylontech, Dyness or BYD are approved across many inverters, so check the current document rather than assuming.
What does BMS communication over CAN or RS485 actually do?
It lets the inverter read state of charge, cell temperature, permitted charge and discharge current and fault flags from the battery management system. Without a matching protocol the inverter cannot control charging safely, so the stack either stays idle or reports a communication fault.
Can I mix batteries from two different brands in one system?
No. Two BMS units from different makers cannot share one DC bus or one protocol, so the inverter can only manage one family. A second brand needs its own inverter input or its own inverter, which rarely makes economic sense.
Is one brand's LiFePO4 better than another's?
Cell chemistry is broadly comparable across the residential market. The real differences are the BMS and its protocol support, module granularity, usable depth of discharge, the warranty basis and how long spare modules stay available. Judge brands on those, not on the chemistry label.
Which battery warranty is better, more years or more cycles?
Whichever limit you will reach first. A household cycling once a day rarely exhausts a cycle count, so the calendar term governs. A pack used for daily arbitrage or a commercial load hits the cycle or throughput limit long before ten years pass.
What is throughput in a battery warranty?
Throughput is the total energy, usually in MWh, that the manufacturer allows to pass through the pack during the warranty term. It is the fairest measure for heavy use because it counts partial cycles honestly instead of assuming every cycle is a full one.
Can I add a module to my stack in a few years?
Usually yes, provided the module family is still in production, the new revision is approved for your firmware and the maximum stack height allows it. Plan the headroom at the first installation, because a discontinued family closes that option permanently.
What happens if the battery manufacturer stops making my model?
The stack keeps working, but it becomes an orphaned system: no spare modules, no expansion and eventually no firmware updates. One failed module can then end the useful life of the whole tower, which is why product family longevity belongs in the buying decision.
Does firmware matter when pairing a battery and an inverter?
Yes. Approved combinations are stated for specific firmware versions on both the inverter and the BMS. Update both during commissioning, confirm the versions against the compatibility document and record them in the handover paperwork for any later warranty claim.
Should I choose the brand before or after the inverter?
After, on a new installation: the inverter defines the DC window and the approved list. On a retrofit where a battery already exists, the order reverses and the battery chooses the inverter. Either way, decide both before ordering the voltage class.
