Fronius Symo GEN24: hybrid three-phase with DC storage and backup
GEN24 is the hybrid generation of the three-phase Symo platform, rated 3 to 10 kW for houses and smaller commercial systems. Unlike the grid-tie Symo it has a DC battery input, so a battery charges directly from the array without a second conversion stage, and integrated backup power, so the installation does not go dark when the grid fails. Fronius steers the flows between array, battery, house, grid and backup circuit with Multi Flow, and the whole scheme depends on a Fronius Smart Meter. The family traits stay: two MPP trackers, active cooling and Fronius Solar.web.

How to choose a Fronius Symo GEN24
Three decisions define the installation: whether a battery goes in now or later, which level of backup the customer actually wants, and where the Smart Meter and the backup switching sit in the board. Settle all three on paper, because two of them are wiring decisions that are awkward to change afterwards.

Battery readiness and retrofit
A GEN24 can be commissioned as a plain grid-tie system and take a battery later, which is the usual argument for specifying it even when storage is not in the first budget. The inverter is not replaced and the array is not touched. The physical side needs planning at first fit.
- Compatibility list: Fronius publishes the batteries approved for GEN24. Approval, not just voltage class, decides what may be connected.
- Cable route and space: leave conduit between the inverter and battery positions, plus board space for the battery protection.
- Backup switching: if Full Backup is possible later, provide for the backup section now rather than rebuilding the board.
- Smart Meter first: it tells the battery when to charge and discharge, so it goes in with the inverter.
PV Point or Full Backup, and what the board needs
PV Point is one dedicated emergency socket supplied straight from the array during an outage: no battery needed, but daylight only. Full Backup disconnects the installation, or a defined backup section, from the grid and supplies it from the inverter and battery, so lighting, sockets and selected loads carry on. The real difference is in the distribution board.

Treat the Fronius Smart Meter as part of the inverter, not an accessory. Without it the GEN24 cannot see what the building consumes, so battery charge and discharge control, self-consumption in Solar.web and dynamic export limiting all fail at once. Reserve DIN rail space next to the main incomer.
Multi Flow energy management
Multi Flow is the GEN24 running several energy paths at once rather than in sequence: charging the battery from the array while supplying the house, discharging into the building, exporting surplus and holding the backup circuit alive. Because the system never has to pick one job per moment, self-consumption stays high in mixed conditions. The rules run on measured data, and the same measurements let a Fronius Wallbox charge a car from surplus.

Can I add a battery to a Symo GEN24 later?
Yes. GEN24 is battery ready on the DC side, so storage can be retrofitted without replacing the inverter or touching the array. Check the battery against the Fronius compatibility list and leave cable routes and board space at first fit.
What is the difference between PV Point and Full Backup?
PV Point powers one dedicated emergency socket straight from the array, so it needs no battery but works only in daylight. Full Backup supplies the installation or a defined backup section from the inverter and battery, and needs changeover switching in the board.
Do I need a Fronius Smart Meter with a GEN24?
