Fronius Symo: three-phase grid-tie for houses and small commercial roofs
Symo is a pure On-Grid string inverter: it takes direct current from the array, converts it to three-phase alternating current and feeds the building first and the grid second. The series spans 3 to 20 kW, which is why the same family turns up on a family house and on a small commercial roof. The package is consistent across the ladder: two independent MPP trackers on most models, SnapINverter mounting with a separate wired wall bracket, active cooling through a field-replaceable fan, and integrated datacom with Ethernet, WLAN and Modbus feeding Fronius Solar.web. There is no battery input and no backup socket, so storage on a Symo is always an AC-coupled addition.

Two questions settle the specification. Will the system ever hold a battery? If yes, the honest answer is usually a Symo GEN24. And how many orientations does the roof have? That decides how the two MPP trackers are used and how the strings are laid out.

Superflex Design: two MPP trackers and string freedom
Fronius calls the two-tracker layout Superflex Design. The two DC inputs are independent and need not be loaded symmetrically, so a long south string and a short east string each track their own maximum power point instead of being averaged into one compromise. That is what makes awkward roofs workable without module-level electronics.
- Two orientations, two tilts, two shading regimes served from one inverter without optimisers.
- Asymmetric loading: the trackers may carry unequal string lengths and unequal power, within the limits the manual states.
- Voltage window still rules. Check string open-circuit voltage at the lowest winter temperature against the maximum DC input voltage before fixing the layout.
- Uniform single-orientation arrays gain nothing from tracker flexibility. On a large plain commercial roof the Fronius Eco fits better.
Active cooling, SnapINverter mounting and siting
Symo moves air through the heatsink with a fan rather than relying on passive convection, so it holds full output on hot days instead of derating early. The fan is a field-replaceable service part. Mounting follows the SnapINverter concept: the wall bracket carrying the connection area is fixed and wired first, then the power stage is hooked on and snapped into place, so one person can hang it and the electrician can pre-wire before the expensive part reaches site. Keep the unit out of direct sun, respect the stated clearances and avoid dusty closed cupboards that clog the airflow path.
Tip from practice
Order a Fronius Smart Meter with the inverter. The Symo measures its own production, but knows nothing about the house until a meter sits at the grid connection point. Without it there is no consumption view in Solar.web and no dynamic export limiting, which is what a network operator asks for when it imposes a reduced or zero feed-in condition.
Adding storage later: AC coupling or a GEN24
Symo has no DC battery input, so a battery cannot be bolted on. There are two honest routes. Either add AC-coupled storage, a separate battery inverter and battery alongside the Symo, which leaves the array untouched but adds a second conversion stage. Or replace the Symo with a Symo GEN24 from the hybrid line, which stores on the DC side and adds backup power. If storage is possible within a few years, specifying the hybrid unit at first fit is normally cheaper than doing it twice.

Can I connect a battery to a Fronius Symo?
Not directly. Symo is a grid-tie inverter with no DC battery input, so storage has to be AC coupled through a separate battery inverter, or the Symo replaced with a Symo GEN24. Plan this before installation if storage is likely.
Does a Fronius Symo keep working during a power cut?
No. Symo is a grid-tie inverter and disconnects when the grid fails, as the grid code requires. Backup supply needs a hybrid inverter with a dedicated backup function, such as the Symo GEN24 with PV Point or Full Backup.
Can one Symo handle an east and a west roof?
Yes, on models with two MPP trackers. Fronius calls it Superflex Design: the two inputs are independent and may carry unequal string lengths and unequal power, so each orientation tracks its own optimum rather than dragging the other down.
Do I need a Fronius Smart Meter with a Symo?
You need one for anything beyond plain production monitoring. The Smart Meter measures at the grid connection point and enables dynamic export limiting and the consumption and self-consumption view in Solar.web. Production monitoring alone works without it.
Symo or Fronius Eco for a commercial roof?
Symo suits small commercial roofs and roofs with several orientations, because its two MPP trackers are the point. Fronius Eco is built for large single-orientation arrays above the Symo range and is not intended for domestic installations.
Is the cooling fan a problem in the long term?
Active cooling is what lets the inverter hold full output on hot days rather than derate early, and Fronius designs the fan as a field-replaceable service part. Mount the unit out of direct sun, keep the stated clearances and avoid dusty enclosed cupboards.
