First decide whether you want battery readiness. That sets the inverter type. Then match the number of phases to your grid connection, which sets the power ceiling. And only at the end pick the modules by output in Wp, cell technology and connector type.

What a photovoltaic system contains
Modules generate direct current, the inverter converts it to alternating current, optional batteries store energy, and the supporting parts, that is mounting, cabling, connectors and protection, hold the whole thing together. The right combination depends on the type of installation, the roof structure and whether you are aiming at self-consumption or backup.
How to choose photovoltaic modules
Start with the module output in Wp and the available roof area. Then compare the module type, monofacial or bifacial, and pick the cell technology: TOPCon, N-type monocrystalline, HJT or Mono PERC. Finally check the practical details such as frame colour and connector type, most often MC4.
- Higher Wp cuts the number of panels you need, but it takes enough space and a compatible string design.
- Bifacial modules gain extra yield when there is enough spacing and a light surface underneath.
- TOPCon, N-type and HJT are chosen for efficiency and behaviour at higher temperatures, Mono PERC is the more affordable option.
Tip from practice
Match the number of inverter phases to the grid connection before you pick the modules. A single-phase inverter on a three-phase connection causes phase imbalance and the grid operator may not approve the connection.
Which inverter type you need
The inverter decides how the system works with the grid and whether it can handle a battery. You can filter by type.
- Grid-tie: standard connection to the grid, focused on generation and self-consumption.
- Hybrid: ready for battery storage, also handles energy flow management.
- Off-grid: for standalone systems with no connection to the public grid.
- Microinverters: mounted on the individual panel, they suit complex roofs and places where shading is a risk.
Choose the number of phases by your electrical connection and target output. Single-phase inverters are common in smaller residential systems, three-phase ones at higher outputs and where the load needs balancing. Always match your choice with the connection conditions of your grid operator.
Battery storage and usable capacity
Batteries raise self-consumption and, with the right design, allow backup as well. Choose by usable capacity in kWh, by charge and discharge power, and by compatibility with the inverter.
- Smaller capacity covers evening consumption and short peaks.
- Larger capacity extends the coverage and raises independence, depending on how the house consumes.
- Check whether your inverter is hybrid, that is ready for a battery, or whether you will need an add-on solution.
Mounting systems and electrical installation material

Frequently asked questions about photovoltaics
What does Wp on a solar panel mean?
Wp is the rated output of the panel under standard test conditions. It lets you compare modules with each other, while the actual output depends on temperature, irradiation and installation conditions.
Are 500 W panels suitable for a family house?
Yes, if the roof and the structure can take the size and weight of the panel. Panels with higher Wp cut the number of modules, but the design still has to fit the limits of the inverter and the string.
What is the difference between a bifacial and a monofacial module?
A monofacial module generates mostly from the front side. A bifacial one also picks up light reflected from below, which raises the yield when there is enough spacing and a light surface underneath.
TOPCon, N-type, HJT or Mono PERC?
These are cell technologies with different properties. TOPCon, N-type and HJT are chosen for efficiency and behaviour at higher temperatures, Mono PERC is the more affordable option.
Which connector is more common, MC4 or EVO2?
MC4 is the most widespread in the industry, EVO2 shows up only on selected product lines. Always match the connector type with your existing cabling and accessories.
Do I need a single-phase or a three-phase inverter?
It depends on your grid connection and target output. Single-phase is common in smaller residential systems, three-phase at higher outputs and where the load needs balancing.

When do optimisers or microinverters make sense?
On roofs with several orientations or with partial shading, where control at the level of the individual module cuts the losses from uneven irradiation.
Final system sizing and compliance with regulations depend on the installation site, the grid operator's conditions and the technical design.
